Player-Centric Design and Killer 7

After reading the reading on design components and process and working on the presentation for my game next week, Killer 7, I would like to ask what the game designer Goichi Suda (Suda 51), was aiming at in his design process of Killer 7 as far as player-centric design.  Killer 7 is a very unique game that is very hard to understand and play at first and takes a lot of work by the player in order to enjoy.  Was Suda 51 concentrating on player-centri design or was their another motive behind his game design?
